Modules
Koodjal Booka is built from four interconnected families of modules: Community, Between, Service and Habitable. Each plays a distinct role in shaping daily life, from collective gathering and shared activity to essential services and private retreat.
Together, these modules can be arranged in response to climate, site, household and the priorities of each community.
Between
A space to share, converse and create.
The Between module creates an inhabited threshold between the private, shared and communal parts of the home. It provides space for conversation, play, making, resting and the everyday interactions that happen between rooms.
Two versions allow the module to connect with adjoining spaces in different directions.
Depending on its orientation, Between can extend movement along the home, turn towards a courtyard, open onto Country or create separation between household activities.
The choice of orientation is shaped through conversation with each family. It responds to how people want to move through the home, which spaces should remain close, where greater privacy is needed and how shared areas should relate to sleeping, service and community spaces.
Sun, shade, prevailing breezes, views, arrival and future growth also influence the orientation. Rather than prescribing one arrangement, the two versions allow Between to respond to the family, the site and the wider community.
Service
A space to cook, bathe and clean.
The Service module brings together the spaces and systems that support nourishment, health, care and daily routines. Kitchens, bathrooms and laundries are designed as practical, durable and adaptable spaces that can respond to the needs of each household.
Concentrating water, drainage and essential infrastructure within dedicated modules simplifies construction and allows services to be tested before arriving on site. It also makes maintenance and future repairs easier, reducing disruption to the rest of the home.
The arrangement of each Service module responds to household size, accessibility, privacy and the ways a family cooks, washes and cares for one another. Its orientation can create direct connections to habitable spaces, shaded outdoor areas, courtyards and the spaces between.
Ventilation, natural light, heat, moisture, dust and water use are considered alongside safe movement, storage and ease of cleaning. The result is a reliable service core that supports the daily life of the home while remaining flexible to family, site and community.
Habitable
A space to rest, withdraw and create.
The Habitable module provides space for sleeping, resting, reflection and personal activity. It creates quieter areas within the home where people can withdraw while remaining connected to family, courtyard and Country.
Rather than prescribing a single use, the module can adapt to different household needs. It may become a sleeping room, a place to study, a creative space, a private retreat or a combination of these uses. Furniture, storage, openings and connections can be arranged so the space can change over time.
The position and orientation of each Habitable module responds to household relationships, privacy, age, accessibility and visiting family. Modules can be grouped where connection is important or separated where greater independence and quiet are needed.
Daylight, shade, breeze, outlook and noise also shape the arrangement. Connections to the spaces Between create a gradual transition from private rooms to shared parts of the home, allowing each family to determine how openness and retreat are balanced.
